Four Simple Backgammon Strategies

Winning in backgammon does not only require a good luck stroke from the dice, but also some strategies as well. The game of backgammon requires a player to play against his enemy. As soon as the player sits beside the backgammon board, there is nothing but the board to separate him from the enemy. Hence, by all means, he should win the game by bearing all of his checkers to his home board - that is, if his enemy doesn't achieve this goal for himself. Therefore, if you are interested in playing against your enemy, here are some backgammon strategies that can help you reach the game's objective.

Blocking is one of the most common backgammon strategies. This tactic is executed by placing your checkers in front of your enemy's. Because your checkers are literally blocking your opponent's checkers, this disables him to leave that certain point. However, make sure that your blocking checkers are also placed safely around the board, so that you can bear them off easily before your opponent does.

Hitting is also one of the popular backgammon strategies that provide the opponent a huge time delay. When an opponent's checker is alone on a certain point, this will be a good opportunity to hit. Hence, by following the proper game sequence, place your checker at that same point. This will force the opponent to place the checker into the bar, thus stalling that checker from reaching the home board.

On the other hand, to defend yourself from the aforementioned offensive backgammon strategies, you can use the strategy of anchoring. Anchoring refers to good positioning that can prevent your checkers from being hit. Hence, it is a good idea not to let your checkers be alone at a singe point, especially is your opponent's checkers are positioned for a hit. Anchoring is one of the defensive backgammon strategies that can prevent, and not answer, an opponent's attack.

Even distribution is also another one of the defensive backgammon strategies. It is better to establish evenly-distributed checkers on two consecutive points than to crowd them all in a single point. Obviously, this position offers a good flexibility and protection from the possible enemy attacks.

Backgammon strategies come in handy during the game simply because there is something you can do besides rolling the dice. However, remember that these strategies work best with the proper timing. But soon after you have used these tactics skillfully, you might want to start reaching for that doubling cube!
