It may appear like a bad strategy to drop some of your pieces at the start of the game; however potentially it will have amazing benefits later in the game. Initially, both of you have less checkers in your home bases making it simpler to have the pieces again in the game towards your home base. Your opponent will soon realize he has so much more pieces and will find it quite complicated to do anything with them. You will have the advantage of having most of your pieces virtually home and possibly winning the whole game.
How you plan on distributing your pieces plays a vital role in your chances of winning. To have six at any slot is never advisable. You have to see to it that you avoid having more than six pieces in one slot. You are in for a definite beating from your opponent.
It may seem like a decent move to you, but spreading two pieces in four different slots is one bad strategy. It is worse than having three pieces in two slots. Again, the key is proper distribution. Put more effort in creating great winning combinations. It will come in handy.
Another aspect of backgammon is blocking. Knowing this gives you a greater edge over your opponent. An excellent coupled with amazing skills in distribution is a sure killer. Always block in your home base making it more difficult for the other player to get his pieces out. This is especially effective when you are able to move six pieces home early in the game. Experts consider points four, five, and seven as the best slots to block.
Hitting is another point that you need to be good at. As a matter of fact you need to hit as often as you can. Hit your opponent whenever possible, taking into consideration all other aspects of the game. There are instances when hitting might not be a good idea at all. It might be better to move your pieces home rather than hitting. So, it is up to you to decide depending on what works best. Hitting sometimes can make you vulnerable to counter-hits. This is what you need to avoid.
You also have to be good at creating anchors. Anchoring is one beneficial strategy. This might actually help you win the game. It is about having a strong spot on your opponent's home base. You may get hit, but if you have a good back-up anchor and put your checker back on, you just have created an amazing edge. It then becomes harder for your opponent to get his pieces out. Creating more than one anchor gives an even better advantage. You become invulnerable.
